Column array speakers are designed to replicate a concert-style line array system, but on a smaller scale. The idea isn't to replicate the power of a concert system in a small box...it's to replicate the coverage pattern. By arranging multiple drivers vertically, the speaker system is able to produce a more uniform sound in a specific area. The array style produces a super wide coverage, compared to traditional 2-way speakers. This means that the volume in front of the speakers will be about the same as it is to the left or right of the speaker. It also reduces the drop in volume with throw distance, giving the audience a smoother, more uniform sound across the dance floor. Just be careful when using column arrays for long-throw applications as the actual drivers are traditionally much smaller than those found in line arrays or traditional 2-way speakers.
